Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Hey Guys!

I decided to write this blog in English from now on. My German is pretty bad now that I talk English all the time and it's just way easier for me this way.

Christmas and New Year is over. I can't believe how fast it went. The whole year you look forward to this special time, make plans, decorate the house, buy presents.. And when Christmas finally arrives it goes way to fast.

This Christmas was special for me. Not only because it was the first Christmas without my family, but also because it was so different from the Christmas back in Germany. December is one of the hottest months here in Australia which is very strange for me. When I think of Christmas I think of snow, hot drinks, warm jackets and sleighs. This time I experienced it in 40 degrees heat, frozen drinks, in bikini and on slippery slides.

On the 24th, me and my host family went to church in the afternoon. I enjoyed singing all the Christmas carols and to remember the meaning of Christmas. Our Dinner afterwards was amazing and we started wrapping our last presents for the next morning.

"Get up - It's Christmas!!". These were the words I woke up to on Christmas Morning. I love the tradition to unwrap all the presents in the morning because of this special feeling. You wake up and it feels like Christmas. Everybody is exited to see their presents and to finally celebrate Christmas the whole day. My host family spoiled me! I got a bike, clothes, a water bottle, bracelets, makeup, perfume, nail polish and much more. We had a big breakfast and visited the rest of the family to celebrate together. It was amazing.

It took some time for me to get used to a hot Christmas without all the german traditions. But my host family made this such a great time for me and I enjoyed every moment. My host mum even made an advent calender for me because I told her about our tradition at home. I loved it!

On New Years Eve, me and my host family went to the Gold Coast and stayed in a Hotel for 2 nights. We swam in the pool, watched the fireworks and sat together on our balcony until we finally started counting down into 2014. What a year.

2013 was the best year of my life - My most exciting indeed. I had the chance to get to know a new country, a new culture, heaps of amazing people and to find myself as a new person. I changed more than ever before and I am very thankful and grateful to be able to experience this.

I hope each and everyone of you enjoyed Christmas and New Years with your families.

Lots of love from Down Under,

Maike :)
